IT Support Specialist

The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) seeks a qualified and highly motivated IT Support Specialist to support its IT Services and user community. The successful candidate will help support and manage a modern, cloud-based IT infrastructure and a heterogeneous environment including workstations used for data analyses and computers connected to scientific instruments for data acquisition.

Your responsibilities

  • Support and contribute to the further development of the institute’s IT Services.
  • Ensure security and data protection compliance of the IT Services and systems along with other relevant IT devices.
  • Set up and maintain computer endpoints (macOS & Windows), peripheral devices (printers, switches, etc.) and multi-vendor video conferencing systems.
  • Provide user training, guidance, and support to end users, manage IT support tickets, and maintain records/ logs of resolutions and fixes.
  • Lifecycle management of endpoints, manage IT inventory (hardware, software, peripheral devices, access points, etc.), identify shortages and manage the relevant procurement process.
  • Schedule maintenance of hardware and software to assure functionality and compliance.
  • Create and manage user and administration documentation to facilitate effective knowledge transfer to both the IT team and the user community.
  • Assure the security of the endpoints by creating, managing, and continually improving the antivirus and local firewall policies facilitating the further hardening of the infrastructure.
  • Manage the local area network components (routers, switches and firewalls) including creating and modifying VLANs and firewall rules.
  • Manage Azure Active Directory, Azure Autopilot deployment and define, create, and modify the Intune management policies to ensure endpoint compliance.
  • A solid understanding of GCP fundamentals including deployment, management, security, and cost management of the cloud solutions.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or the equivalent relevant experience; IT certification is an advantage.
  • Minimum 7+ years proven experience as an IT Support Specialist or equivalent; experience in research setting or degree in the natural sciences is advantageous.
  • Minimum 4+ years proven experience installing and supporting network components (routers, swithes, firewalls, etc.)
  • Minimum 4+ years proven experience working with and supporting MS Azure and Google cloud products.
  • Strong customer orientation with outstanding communication and problem-solving capabilities.
  • In-depth understanding of and experience with diverse computer systems and networks; macOS and Windows endpoints along with Linux and Windows VM deployment.
  • Good knowledge of internet security and data protection principles.
  • IT project management skills are essential, including excellent organizational and time-management capabilities.
  • Scripting and programming experience relevant to basic systems administration.
  • You are a solution orientated, self-starter who can work on their own initiative and pursue issues to their natural conclusion.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. The addition of German would be a plus.
  • This position is hands-on and demands both an independent working style and an ability to interact comfortably with users of varying IT skills. Openness to innovative, non-traditional solutions is very important.
